Job Summary

Supervises, coordinates, provides leadership, development of an effective team of custodial personnel, participates in the care, cleaning, and general housekeeping of all buildings, and assists with special events. Under direction of supervisor serves as primary custodial lead.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and instruction to small groups of custodians by leading or directing custodial activities during scheduled work periods (including weekends), or when performing special cleaning projects and other events that are assigned (per work orders) by the supervisor.

  • Makes work assignments in accordance with predetermined schedules, reviews the work of employees, and assists in training of new personnel. Trains, organizes, schedules, and assigns work routines to all applicable custodial employees.

  • Must be able to show knowledge of and train employees on the following types of equipment: auto scrubbers, swing buffers, wet vacuums, ride on concrete scrubbers, ride on scrubbers, and pressure washers.

  • Conducts inspection of buildings and grounds in assigned areas. Works with employees to ensure that assigned buildings work orders and complaints from their buildings are completed in a timely manner. Ensures that the custodians have the proper materials and supplies in the buildings to do the jobs effectively. Works with staff under him/her to make changes in the buildings’ schedules to ensure that the buildings are serviced in a timely manner. Assists in equipment inventories. Carries out foreman responsibilities (listed below) in a timely, fair, and objective manner.

  • Assist in the maintenance and care of custodial and event services equipment and furnishing such as vacuum cleaners, buffing machines, pressure washers, tables, chairs, tents, podiums, and other related equipment and furnishing, as required.

  • This position will require participation in call-out responsibilities and may require night shift responsibilities and weekend work. Performs additional duties as assigned.

  • Reports damaged structures and equipment to supervisor.

  • Serves as a member of the Ocean Enterprise Essential Personnel and as directed by the Ocean Enterprise Facilities Director and participates in pre-emergency preparations and post-emergency recovery efforts.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or general education degree (GED). One year custodial supervisory experience and minimum three years working level custodial experience and/or related experience. Driver's License required. Must possess or be able to possess a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card for access to the Port of Gulfport.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of University policies and procedures, professional standards and regulations, safety requirements and a knowledge of basic first aid.

  • Knowledge of cleaning techniques and procedures, and the use of custodial materials, tools, equipment, and chemicals.

  • Skill in managing ones’ own time and the time of others while monitoring/assessing the performance of self, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action.

  • Skill in the operation of office equipment including, but not limited to, multiline telephone, video conference equipment, as well as computer applications including spreadsheet, database, and word processing software.

  • Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure and the ability to react and respond quickly and calmly in emergency situations.

  • Ability to establish and maintain a good rapport with university faculty and staff, students, and the general public.

  • Ability to work successfully as a member of a team and independently with moderate supervision.

  • Skill in material resources management through obtaining and seeing to the appropriate use of equipment, facilities, and materials needed to do certain work.

  • Ability to obtain a driver’s license prior to employment.

  • Ability to operate, automatic floor scrubbers, buffers, and forklifts.

  • Ability to perform hard floor care to include applying and removing stripper and applying multiple coats of floor wax.

  • Ability to work nights and weekends when required.

  • Ability to understand differences in cleaning chemicals.
