LSU Health New Orleans Division of Facility Services is seeking highly skilled and motivated applicants for the title of Electronic Technician or Electronic Technician Advanced. Persons applying must possesstwo years of experience in the maintenance or repair of mechanical or electronic office equipment, precision machinery, or electronic and electrical systems or in the installation, repair or maintenance of computer equipment or systems (hardware and/or software).

This position is included in a Career Progression Group.

As part of a Career Progression Group, vacancies may be filled from this recruitment as an (Electronic Technician or Electronic Technician Advanced) depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant(s). Please refer to the ‘Job Specifications’ tab located at the top of the LA Careers ‘Current Job Opportunities’ page of the Civil Service website for specific information on salary ranges, minimum qualifications and job concepts for each level.

Starting rate of pay is $24.10 with an additional $1 Longevity Pay for hours worked only, but can be adjusted higher based on the applicants’ qualifications.

Duties and Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Installs, diagnoses, repairs, services, alters, and maintains electronic systems, including fire alarm systems and variable speed drives

  • Reads and interprets electric/electronic schematics and mechanical layouts during diagnosis and repairs of equipment

  • Monitors contractor work and discusses projects with immediate supervisor to change ideas on methods to be used and to eliminate misunderstandings prior to beginning the work

  • Operates, monitors, and controls the automation system

  • Plan, price, and order materials necessary for repairs using proper facility purchasing rules/regulations

  • Assists other trades as needed

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Three years of experience in the maintenance or repair of mechanical or electronic office equipment, precision machinery, or electronic and electrical systems or in the installation, repair or maintenance of computer equipment or systems (hardware and/or software).

SUBSTITUTIONS:

Training in a vocational-technical school or military school will substitute for a maximum of two years of the required experience on the basis of one year of training for one year of experience.

College training with at least six semester hours per year in electronics or computer science will substitute for the experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience.

CompTIA A+ Certification will substitute for one year of the required experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

Must possess an appropriate Federal Communications Commission (FCC) radio-telephone license when working with marine and aviation transmitting equipment or with radar.

May be required to have technician certification by the National Association of Business and Educational Radio (NABER).

May be required to possess a valid Louisiana driver's license at the time of appointment.

NOTE:

The maintenance or repair of electronic or electrical systems includes the repair or maintenance of radio or television broadcasting equipment; or electronic equipment such as radios, televisions or VCRs.

NOTE:

Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.

Job Concepts

Function of Work:

To maintain and repair all makes and types of office machines, electronic and mechanical equipment, electronic communications, television (TV) systems, and mobile communications equipment.

Level of Work:

Experienced.

Supervision Received:

General from an Electronic Technician Supervisor.

Supervision Exercised:

Functional over lower level Electronic Technicians.

Location of Work:

May be used by any state agency.

Job Distinctions:

Differs from Electronic Technician Supervisor by lack of first line supervisory responsibilities.

Differs from Electronic Technician performance of more complex work and lead worker responsibilities.

Examples of Work

Reviews work of and provides guidance to lower level Electronic Technicians on a project basis.

Reads and interprets the most complex electric and electronic schematics and mechanical layouts during diagnosis and repair of complex electronic equipment.

Makes estimates of repairs to determine if feasible.

Provides visual inspection of television equipment, checking for safety defects and repairing as required.

Maintains an inventory system of parts for immediate and emergency repairs.

Performs diagnosis and repairs on the most complex electronic and mechanical equipment.

Performs preventive maintenance operations as required on a periodic basis.

Assists in check-out and installation of equipment and systems and recommends acceptance or rejection until corrections are made.

Installs, updates, and expands components and systems to equipment and checks for proper operation.

Performs repairs to component level on equipment responsible for.

Installs two-way radios in state vehicles.

Serves as liaison with manufacturing and distributors of radio parts and other communications related personnel.

Issues citations as needed for failure of operators to follow federal and state rules and regulations.
