LSU Health New Orleans Division of Facility Services is seeking motivated applicants for the title of Operating Engineer 1 or 2.

The starting rate is $19.67 per hour, rate may be adjusted dependent upon applicants’ qualifications. There is also an additional $1 Longevity Pay, $2 Shift Differential Pay and $3 Weekend Pay for hours worked only.

Must be available for scheduled shift work after regular working hours and during holidays.

Duties and Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Maintains, inspects, and prepares mechanical equipment and components including compressors, condensers, expansion valves, service valves, thermostats, coils and drive assemblies

  • Cleans and/or replace this filters on heating/air condition units as necessary adjustments to produce desired temperatures; e) response to temperature complaints from building occupants

  • Operates auxiliaries including firing up steam boilers, starting and stopping chillers, pumps, cooling towers, heat exchangers, refrigeration and HVAC equipment

  • Reads gauges to check water levels, steam pressure, and operation of valves and auxiliary pumps

  • Possesses the ability to properly and safely operate the following equipment: manlift, drill press, and other equipment used in daily task

  • Takes immediate action to personally stop unsafe acts if delay to inform supervisor may allow accident to occur

  • Assist other trades as needed

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Two years of experience in the operation, repair and/or maintenance of large commercial or industrial stationary engines or mechanical equipment such as air conditioning, heating, refrigerating, pumping, generating, chillers, or closely related systems.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

Training in commercial air conditioning, refrigeration or diesel mechanics will substitute for the required experience on a month for month basis.

NOTE:

Incidental duties in operating or maintaining one's own heating, air conditioning or related equipment will not be considered as qualifying experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

For those positions in which incumbents will be working with and handling refrigerants, possession of an appropriate EPA refrigerant recycling and recovery certification for technicians will be required (as required under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, 1990).

Function of Work:

To operate, regulate, monitor, service and maintain ventilation, refrigeration, heating and related machinery and equipment, including pumps and other utility systems.

Level of Work:

Experienced.

Supervision Received:

General from a higher-level Operating Engineer or agency official.

Supervision Exercised:

None.

Location of Work:

May be used by all state agencies.

Job Distinctions:

Differs from the Operating Engineer 1 by the presence of responsibility for Boilers or power plants of 150 horsepower or more.

Differs from the Operating Engineer Master by the absence of responsibility for serving as the sole operator on an assigned shift, for serving as lead-worker over Operating Engineers, providing direct-line supervision to one Operating Engineer position, or serving in a large institution with at least 100 buildings or more that has a computer operated centralized energy management system that includes: chillers that handle 11,000 tons or more of chilled water with a total of 4,500 horsepower or more and boilers having 50 tons or more steam capacity and a total of 5,000 horsepower or more.

Examples of Work

Performs preventive maintenance (oils motors, changes belts and filters, paints and cleans) on boilers and related equipment such as ventilating and refrigeration equipment, air conditioning machinery, generators, suction fans, pumps, and compressors.

Maintains a logbook that details the operation of boilers and/or pumping equipment and lists any maintenance work performed.

Starts and stops pumps.

Fires gas or oil fired boilers.

Adjusts fuel and airflow.

Regulates water level.

Reads gauges to check water level, steam pressure, and operation of valves and auxiliary pumps.

Performs minor repairs on boilers and related equipment.

Assists, if needed, skilled workers in performing major repairs.

Oversees wastewater treatment.

Ensures that pump station is properly maintained.
