POSITION DETAILS

The School of Professional Studies at the City University of New York (CUNY SPS) seeks a committed and seasoned Executive Director of Development to raise funds for this rising public institution with a focus on cultivating corporate and industry partnerships.

CUNY SPS is a leading school in both professional education and online learning. With 26 degrees and numerous workplace learning programs, CUNY SPS meets the needs of adults who wish to finish a bachelor's degree, progress from an associate degree, earn a master's degree or certificate in a specialized field, advance in the workplace, or change careers. The Executive Director of Development will be responsible for ensuring that the School’s fundraising keeps pace with growth and recognition, and meets annually set goals. They will design, implement, and manage all fundraising efforts targeting our top priorities while upholding core values of teamwork, integrity, accountability, and respect. In addition, the Executive Director will develop and recruit a cadre of organizational leaders from business and industry and the non-profit sector for the purposes of establishing remunerative partnerships.

The incumbent will serve as a senior member of the leadership team at CUNY SPS and while reporting to the Dean, the Executive Director will work in partnership with an active and expanded CUNY SPS Foundation Board of Directors and with industry partners to develop joint relationships for the purpose of fundraising for student scholarships and support, innovative SPS programs, educational partnerships, curricular expansion, and increased student recruitment.

The Executive Director will strengthen and expand individual donors, private and family foundations, corporate donations/sponsorships, and industry education partnerships; and, will be responsible for managing and growing of the School’s alumni gifts campaign.

The Executive Director will:

  • Oversee the growth of philanthropic revenue and foster a culture of philanthropy at CUNY SPS

  • Identify, research, and cultivate fundraising prospects with potential for connection with the School’s mission

  • Forge relationships with new major donors and cultivate existing ones for annual and endowment gifts to create meaningful points of connection between donors and the School’s goals, programs, and students

  • Work closely with the Foundation Board Chair and Board members to develop requests to secure support for the annual fund, program initiatives, scholarships, endowments, and foundations

  • Direct the work of the Alumni Relations staff in planning and promotion of alumni programs that support a wide range of alumni (locally, regionally, and nationally)

  • Manage an aggressive calendar of outreach that involves faculty, staff, alumni, board members, and volunteers

  • Manage all aspects of gift administration, documentation, compliance, and reporting

  • Serve as the chief liaison to CUNY Central office on all development/fundraising strategies and efforts, and serve as chief spokesperson in the area of Development; develop and sustain effective relationships with all internal and external stakeholders

NOTE:

  • Until further notice, work will be performed in a hybrid manner with 70% onsite presence.

  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience. Additional qualifications are defined below.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The preferred candidate will be a skilled, knowledgeable fundraiser with a track record of success who will bring a broad strategic vision and the ability to implement that vision and will work hard while leading and motivating others. Specific attributes include:

  • Excellent leadership and ability to communicate diplomatically across broad constituencies.

  • Knowledge and experience with college advancement and within urban public higher education.

  • Some experience with industry partnership development.

  • A proven record of success with a range of fundraising activities including securing major gifts from corporations, foundations, and individuals.

  • Ability to apply development-specific technology to assess and improve systems and processes to further advancement goals.

  • An entrepreneurial and innovative approach to fundraising with agility, transparency, and political astuteness to navigate the CUNY system and a diverse Foundation Board and alumni base.

  • Commitment to university and campus values of equity, diversity, and inclusion.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Salary commensurate with education and experience between $125,000 and $135,000.
