Microsoft Corporation Senior Thermal Engineer in Redmond, Washington

We are looking for a Senior Thermal Engineer to focus on the thermal design for the next generation Surface Products. A mix of technical breadth and depth will allow you to work cross-functionally with different disciplines (Industrial Design, Mechanical, Electrical, and Software) to develop compelling innovative products. You will work with internal and external partners, focusing on delivering the next amazing hardware experience for our customers.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with industrial design, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering teams to define the system architecture, product features, and feasibilities through comprehensive thermal simulations in product creation phase.

  • Conduct and lead thermal simulations to understand all thermal design tradeoffs.

  • Lead thermal design reviews and presentations to both internal teams and external partners.

  • Drive new thermal technology developments, implementation, and integrations.

  • Mentor other thermal engineer and thermal analysts for thermal simulations, fan simulations and acoustic simulations.

  • Overcome simulation challenges in different types of projects, including passive cooling, active cooling, and liquid cooling.

  • Explore new simulation techniques to improve simulation effectiveness and efficiency.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications:

  • 7+ years related technical engineering experience

  • OR Bachelor's degree in Thermal or Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related technical engineering experience

  • OR Master's degree in Thermal or Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related technical engineering experience

  • OR Doctorate degree in Thermal or Mechanical Engineering, or related field

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • Experience in thermal design and analysis of consumer electronics desired. Working knowledge of industrial design, mechanical and electrical system design considerations.

  • Exposure/Hands-on experience with thermal, airflow, and acoustic testing

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 14+ years related technical engineering experience

  • OR Bachelor's degree in Thermal or Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 10+ years related technical engineering experience

  • OR Master's degree in Thermal or Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years related technical engineering experience

  • OR Doctorate degree in Thermal or Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years related technical engineering experience

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • Proficiency in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis, fan simulation and aero-acoustic simulation. Expertise using FloEFD and FlothermXT. Experience of Ansys Fluent is a plus.

  • Deep understanding of system level thermal design and design tradeoffs, including passive cooling, active cooling, and liquid cooling.

  • Good understanding of component level thermal design and design tradeoffs, including TIM, heat sink, fan, heat pipe, and vapor chamber.

  • Hands-on experience with thermal testing, airflow testing and acoustic testing.

  • Experience with Mechanical Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and CAD data management. Parametric Technology Corporation (PTC) Creo and Windchill.

  • Solid communication skills, including the ability to clearly express technical concepts in verbal and written forms.

  • Experience creating high-level systems concepts, documenting, and evaluating concepts, and providing analysis to other organizations and upper management.

  • Problem-solving, debug, and failure analysis skills with a solid understanding of core engineering principles and analytical techniques required to help both internal and external partners.

  • Some travel domestic/international travel required as appropriate to support design and build activities.

Mechanical Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $112,000 - $218,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $145,800 - $238,600 per year.
