Catholic Community Services Student Support Specialist - Youth Tutoring in Seattle, Washington

$28 per hour. This is a T emporary Part-time position. 25 hours/week

Program Description

The Youth Tutoring Program (YTP) is an after-school educational enrichment program for first through twelfth-grade scholars who live in five low- and mixed-income housing communities in Seattle. Started as a partnership with the Seattle Housing Authority in 1991, the tutoring centers provide youth with a safe, positive, and stimulating environment to explore learning and experience academic and personal success.

Position Description

The Youth Tutoring Program is seeking a program assistant to support activities in an elementary school summer learning program scheduled for July 8th to August 16th, 2024, spanning six weeks. The Scholar Support Specialist (SSS) will have a pivotal role in executing the Yesler Terrace Summer program. The SSS will primarily focus on implementing Social Emotional Learning sessions with individual scholars or small groups, and will be responsible for intervening, redirecting, and providing support to scholars facing behavioral challenges.

Behavior management activities will encompass employing positive behavior interventions, facilitating conflict resolution, and being readily available to assist scholars as needed. Additionally, the SSS will handle administrative tasks such as recording and monitoring scholar attendance, and communicating with families regarding absences and behavioral concerns. This role will also involve assisting the Center Supervisor in overseeing scholars during educational and enrichment activities, undertaking duties including the distribution of learning materials and supplies, and providing support to families with scheduling and other program-related queries.

The Student Support Specialist will work 25 hours a week, Monday through Friday. This position is temporary and will start from June 19th – August 16th.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Work individually and in small groups with scholars that are experiencing behavioral issues.

  • Lead attendance monitoring and recording, ensuring accurate data entry.

  • Develop morning and end of day social-emotional learning activities.

  • Assist Center Supervisor with training of staff and volunteers prior to the summer program starting.

  • Provide support with supervision of scholars during learning and enrichment activities.

  • Contribute to a positive program-wide culture and behavioral norms.

  • Assist with snack, supplies, and other tasks as needed.

  • Lead and develop summer activities as directed by the Center Supervisor, which include leading STEAM lessons, groups, or field trips.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with scholars with a range of challenging behaviors and social-emotional support needs.

  • Experience working with scholars in an educational setting.

  • Cultural competence in working with diverse scholars.

  • Strong classroom management skills.

  • Strong technology skills.

  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

  • Commitment to development and supporting values of a culturally diverse work environment.

  • Current First Aid/CPR certification required before employment.

  • Support and contribute to a creative, collaborative, and respectful environment that promotes Teamwork.

  • Support and uphold the mission, beliefs, and values of Catholic Community Services and Catholic Housing Services.

  • Criminal history background checks are required before employment.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • One year or more of experience as an instructional assistant or similar position in an elementary school classroom, afterschool program, or summer program

  • Skills and training in Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports and Restorative Justice practices.

  • Experience with remote learning.

  • Experience working with immigrant families.
