Staff Chaplain - Department of Mission and Pastoral Care - MedStar/Georgetown University Hospital

Job Overview

The Staff Chaplain provides pastoral, spiritual, and emotional care and support to the patients, their family and surrogates, and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital associates. Each unit and service line of the hospital has unique patient populations and needs.

In collaboration with the Department’s Director, the Staff Chaplain develops a stratagem to meet the particular needs reflecting the chaplain’s skills, the Catholic Identity, the Ignatian traditions of cura personalis, “women and men for others,” and the SPIRIT values of MedStar-Georgetown University Hospital. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provides interfaith spiritual care to patients, families and staff in assigned patient care areas with a focus on Transplant Services

  • Responds to calls regarding spiritual care matters in all areas at the hospital

  • Provides spiritual care education to clinicians and assigned areas of the hospital

  • Provides spiritual leadership in assigned patient care areas, and - over time - throughout the organization upon request from the Department Director

  • Participates in the department's plan for continuous quality improvement

  • Provides pastoral leadership for institutional events - such as invocations, benedictions memorial services, worship services, dedications, celebrations, and support groups

  • Participates in orienting and mentoring CPE interns and residents during their training.

  • Demonstrates collaborative working relationships with other disciplines while caring for patients and visitors and within the department to promote departmental goals

  • Demonstrates respect and support for the diversity of faith traditions and individual spiritual beliefs of patients, visitors and associates

  • Works day and overnight on call shifts on weekdays, weekends, and holidays as needed

Work Interactions

Reporting to and collaborating with the Department Director, the Staff Chaplain is an integral team member of Mission and Pastoral Care, as well as the multidisciplinary teams for assigned clinical units.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in theology or equivalent training at an accredited religious seminary or theological school

  • A minimum of four (4) units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) from an accredited program under the auspices of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE)

  • Board certification from the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC), Neshama: Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC), or working towards board certification

  • Computer literacy and experience in electronic medical record documentation

  • Ability the exercise independent judgment regard work assignments, which are generally received in the form of results expected, due dates, and general approach to be taken

  • Strong communication skills, collaborative style, pastoral presence, group facilitation skills, and ability to work effectively across disciplines, creativity and flexibility

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1 to 3 years of healthcare chaplaincy experience

  • Organ transplant chaplaincy experience

  • Working knowledge of the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Healthcare Services
