GE Vernova Technical Leader – Nuclear Thermal-Hydraulic Methods and Advanced Design (Remote Eligible, U.S) in Wilmington, North Carolina

Job Description Summary

This role contributes to company objectives in the fields of reactor thermal-hydraulic analysis and methods. It integrates and develops thermal-hydraulic technologies, application methodologies, and supporting processes that meet business needs across the organization. Specifically, this includes NQA-1 qualification of thermal-hydraulic computational software for fast reactors, code benchmarking, associated documentation, licensing activities, code deployment, and user support.

The Technical Leader will work within the Core & Fuel Engineering organization to support all business units within GNF/GEH across Fuels, Services, and Advanced Design Engineering. The role involves leading engineers towards development, verification, validation, and maintenance of computational methods for thermal-hydraulic analysis of sodium-cooled fast reactors, as well as other advanced and existing (BWR/PWR) reactor designs. The technical leader will also plan, assign and manage resources for the team and provide coaching/mentoring to less experienced team members.

This role is within the Thermal & Fluid Analysis team, which is responsible for the development, maintenance, analytics, and technical consultation of engineering computer codes, correlations, methodologies, and new fuel designs related to Boiling Water Reactor (BWR), Pressurized Water Reactors (PWR), new reactor types, and advanced/fast reactors. TFA is also responsible for supporting customers with emergent questions in the areas of reactor thermal-hydraulics, heat transfer, and two-phase flow.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Provide support to the functional manager to plan, assign, and manage resources and schedules within the TFA team.

  • Provide technical leadership for reactor thermal-hydraulic analysis and methodologies within the TFA team.

  • Establish and maintain relationships with teams and commercial leaders within the broader Engineering organization to understand upcoming work demands and provide inputs on team capability and availability.

  • Perform manager review and approval of engineering technical deliverables for GNF/GEH customers.

  • Work with project managers and commercial program managers to provide work planning, scheduling, and technical support for customer deliverables.

  • Advocate for, and lead, team process improvements to drive speed and simplification.

  • Ensure work is performed with high quality in accordance with NRC rules and regulations, customer requirements, and business quality assurance standards.

  • Drive a team culture based on team work, integrity, candor, transparency, and execution on commitments by providing constructive coaching feedback to employees.

  • Effectively communicate and coordinate activities with other team members on engineering/technical issues.

  • Responsible for leading the technical development, accuracy and uncertainty qualification, testing, verification, regulatory licensing, and maintenance of analytical methods required for evaluation of steady-state and transient core/fuel performance of nuclear reactors.

  • Work within an approved regulatory framework for nuclear software quality assurance for engineering computer programs.

  • Prepare, document and present technical data to internal and external customers.

  • Support teams working in various time zones globally.

  • Support the interface with various regulatory agencies (NRC, DOE, etc.) as appropriate.

Basic Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree from an accredited university or college in nuclear engineering, physics, mathematics, or a closely related technical discipline

  • 8 or more years of cumulative engineering experience

Eligibility Requirements:

  • The preferred work location for this role is at the GEH Headquarters in Wilmington, NC; but highly qualified (US based) remote candidates will be considered.

  • Comfortable with less than 10% travel

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated industry experience with project management and resource allocation

  • Ph.D. in computational methods, thermal-hydraulics, nuclear engineering, or a closely related discipline.

  • Working knowledge of project scheduling software such as P6 Primavera.

  • Prior experience with thermal-hydraulic methods (e.g., TRACG, RELAP5-3D, Fluent, COBRA, ISCOR)

  • Prior experience with the development of new fuel designs including the management of thermal hydraulic testing (integral effects or separate-effects; full-scale or reduced scale)

  • Prior experience with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) using ANSYS-Fluent or similar.

  • Experience with software Commercial Grade Dedication in accordance with NQA-1.

  • Programming experience with Fortran, C#, and Python.

  • Working knowledge of nuclear reactor core licensing, technical specifications, safety margin bases, code methodology licensing, and related federal regulations.

  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions with speed and accuracy based on the best available information.

  • Exceptional organization and communication skills.

  • Legacy of delivering on commitments; tenacious, with a proven track record of overcoming obstacles; ability to achieve stretch targets.

  • Strong external focus; clear and demonstrated understanding of nuclear industry and/or energy industry.

  • Six Sigma Green Belt, Black Belt, or equivalent quality certification.

The salary range for this position is $112 – 158k. The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate’s experience, their education, and the work location. In addition, this position is eligible for a performance bonus.
